Cemeteries are more than places of burial.
They are green sanctuaries. Historical archives. Silent witnesses of local identity.

Forever Connected helps cities and municipalities transform cemeteries into inviting, multifunctional open-air museums by installing beautiful, durable QR plaques on graves of cultural, historical, local or artistic importance. Each plaque links directly to the story behind the grave — revealing biographies, archival material, historical context and multimedia content — and turning silent monuments into accessible, living heritage. Through this combination of physical plaques and digital storytelling, heritage, remembrance and community come together in a respectful and future-proof way.

In this blog post, Frederik, Forever Connected's Founder, explains how technology can help preserve memory, heritage and legacy.

Example of how Cities use our solution to turn cemeteries into open-air museums with stories of notable graves: we provide QR plaques with beautiful designs that scan like a QR code, and link to our platform where the stories can be stored

You can scan the QR in the image above. The QR code leads to a memorial page of Joan Gamper, the founder of FC Barcelona. Note that this is not the actual grave of Joan Gamper but a mockup for illustrative purposes.

  • Heritage Storytelling Platform

We provide a structured, blog-style storytelling environment tailored for municipalities:
    • One-page historical profiles
    • Text, archival photos, video and audio
    • Mobile-friendly experience
    • Fast-loading, respectful design

  • Visually attractive QR Plaques

    Each selected grave receives:
    • A discreet, durable QR plaque
    • Weather-resistant material suitable for long-term outdoor use
    • A visually refined QR design that integrates respectfully with the monument:
We offer a library of refined QR designs (natural, historical, minimalist, contemporary) or we design QR codes tailored to the municipality’s visual identity.

  • Larger Entrance QR Plaque(s)

In addition to individual grave plaques, a QR plaque at the cemetery entrance can serve as a digital starting point.
When scanned, it can link to:
    • A digital cemetery guide
    • An interactive map with highlighted historical graves
    • A curated heritage walking route
    • A short introduction video about the cemetery
    • A message from the city or heritage department
    • Practical visitor information
    • And you can modify the link (content) as often as you like via our platform

Pilot project in Gerpinnes (Belgium)

  • Launched in September 2025, this project has already revealed the stories of several individuals and graves of local historical significance.
  • Six Locally Historically Important Graves have already been identified and equipped at the Acoz cemetery.
  • An inventory of other locally historically important graves is currently being developed.
  • A local history circle and volunteer citizens collaborate to identify LHIG in the other cemeteries as well.

Large QR Plaque at the entrance

An entrance QR plaque provides access to various information:

  • search for a deceased person
  • discover the cemeteries and their heritage (including a virtual 3D visit)
  • consult practical information
  • view public notices

Integration with cemetery management platform

The commune of Gerpinnes uses software from d2d3.com to manage their cemeteries. This includes 3D mapping and drone-captured details of the graves with an overlay of information that includes the links to the pages with the stories behind the graves. This allows a website visitor to discover the graves of local historical importance and do a virtual visit.

Why This Matters for Municipalities

1. Cultural Heritage Preservation

Graves of historical importance are often forgotten due to time, weather and generational shifts.
Digital storytelling ensures their legacy remains accessible.

2. Tourism & Local Identity

Cemeteries can become part of a broader touristic route — especially when integrated into local history narratives.

3. Community Engagement

A “club of historians” or volunteer network can enrich stories and keep content alive — fostering ownership and pride.

4. Digital Accessibility

Families who no longer live locally can still connect with their heritage.

5. Strengthening Public Value

Cemeteries serve broader societal functions:

  • Social cohesion
  • Historical education
  • Biodiversity
  • Public green space

Our solution helps municipalities demonstrate and activate that broader value.

The Future of Cemeteries Starts Today

The cemetery of the future does not begin decades from now. It begins with small, meaningful steps today.

By embracing storytelling, digital accessibility and community engagement, cities can:

  • Preserve memory
  • Activate heritage
  • Connect generations
  • And transform silent spaces into living cultural landscapes
